Talking Stick Circles
by Donation
Friday nights
7pm-9:30pm

The Talking Stick is an ancient indigenous ceremony with a specific intention to provide a safe, open space to share about your experience of life while others purely listen, and then to listen to the journey of others in return. What it is not, is a place to have a conversation, fix, analyze, improve or anything else other than to simply hear and be heard. The benefits of talking stick are subtle yet powerful. Through participation in talking stick circles, participants develop a sense of community and togetherness around being on a spiritual, introspective or intentful path, they experience being seen, heard and honored for one's truest self, have the space to release whatever is being held inside, and uncover one's own wisdom through verbal processing. It is a forum best suited for people who enjoy sharing verbally as well as listening openly.

What is a Talking Stick Circle?
A talking stick circle is, very simply, a safe space for people to share about their experience of life while others listen.  A place to hear, and be heard.

How does it work?

A stick is passed around a circle. Whoever is holding the stick has the floor while everyone else listens.  A person is welcome to share, from the heart, whatever needs to be spoken, while others listen from the heart place.  When a person is done sharing, they simply pass the stick on.  You can say as much or as little as you want, though people are encouraged to be conscious of the rest of the group when choosing to share at length.

At any point, a person is welcome to join in or leave, respectfully, when they need, though it is preferred for people to arrive punctually and stay until the end if they can.

The stick can go around the circle once, but sometimes circles are structured where the stick is passed until it gets all the way around the circle without anyone saying anything.

During Balance Point Talking Stick Circles, we will likely pass the stick around at least twice.

What are the benefits?

  • develop a sense of community and togetherness around being on a spiritual, introspective or intentful path
  • experience being seen, heard, accepted and honored for your truest self
  • have the space to release whatever is being held inside
  • uncover your own wisdom through verbal processing.

What makes it safe?

Bearing witness

Whatever a person shares is between them and the Source of life, all the other people in the group are simply bearing witness, providing the space for it to come out.

No dialogue, cross-talk, response, feedback, comments

If what someone shares sparks something inside yourself that you want to share, it is important to keep what you share about yourself, rather than a response to another person.  The Balance Point practice is that, if, after the circle, you want to offer feedback, converse or ask questions to someone, you can ask them if they are open to discussing something they shared in circle, knowing that they have the full right to say “no”.  Even with this practice, please use your discression to preserve the safety of the space for simple expression.  There is no offering of feedback during a circle.

Confidentiality

Everything that is shared in the circle, stays in the circle.

No consoling, verbally or physically, if/when someone begins to emote (if it is too much for you, you may leave the circle)

When a person comes to an emotional place when sharing, it is common for others to feel drawn to console the person with tender touches or soothing words. Please do not do this. If you have this urge, notice how the person’s emotions may be bringing up uncomfortable emotions inside of yourself, and try to be present with that.  If a person is emoting, that means the medicine of the circle is working, and helping them to process something. When we sooth or console, though we may not be consciously aware of it, we are trying to stop the emotional release, and we are not fully listening to what is being shared. The best way to support that person in context of the circle is to fully listen with compassion & honoring for their truth.
Exceptions: If the person themselves specifically asks to be touched, you can do so. If you feel extremely called to offer physical touches when they have not been solicited, you can ask the person if they would like to receive, knowing they have a full right to say “no”.

Take responsibility for your own judgments or reactions

If what someone shares brings up judgments, personal feelings, or a desire to fix, change someone, you are invited to introspect what the reflection is for you in your life.  When a life situation of someone else bothers us, it is usually because it is connecting with something in our own lives that we are challenged by. If you need to process some of this, Julie is available for short check-ins after the circle or for private sessions.

Where did this practice come from?

This is an ancient practice used throughout history by many native peoples for facilitating councils and other such forums in order to make sure that everybody’s voice is heard. I have heard tell of stories where a tribe sat in talking stick for three days, until everyone had their full say.  We live in a fast-paced modern society where we are not very used to pure listening, nor purely being heard. It can be strong medicine for the soul.  And while three days may be more than any of us or our modern schedules can bear, a couple of hours can have a powerful effect.
